In recent years, there has been an alarming rise in the number of reported workplace injuries and deaths, because of forklift accidents. The common causes are pedestrians being struck by either the load being carried by the forklift, because the driver did not see the person. Forklift operators have been killed during a tip-over when they have either tried to jump clear of the machine and ended up getting crushed during the rollover, or been crushed by the load during the accident.
In an attempt to bring an end to these accidents, and promote all-round safer workplace practices relating to forklift driving, driver awareness and management, the Government Authority "Worksafe" has published an article about reducing the incidence of forklift accidents at work. Strict forklift driver training programs are stipulated as part of the licencing program. This means that people who want to get a forklift licence must enrol in a forklift training course that is recongnised nationally. These legislative changes came into effect on October 1st, 2012.
This new system has a documented process and evidence requirements that prove that the trainee has gone through a structured training and assessment system. Victorian Forklift Assessments does 2 visits to the site. The first visit is to enrol the trainee into the nationally recognised training program and also to issue learning material and conduct driver training (often to correct bad habits that may have crept in).
The second visit is to conduct the assessment as well as cover a few other things. At the conclusion trainees are issued with a Notice of Satisfactory Assessment which needs to be presented to an Australia Post office within 60 days, the licence is then delivered to the trainees home address. Licences are issued for a 5 year period with renewal notices sent out after 4yrs and 9 months to the address on the Worksafe Victoria data base.
